President/Managing Director and Board Member

My name is Ruth Yu, and I was born and raised in Vancouver. I recently graduated from UBC Biomedical Engineering and will be starting my master’s degree at UBC focusing on developing a microfluidic-assisted method for analyzing the spatial genomics of rare cancer cell populations. In my spare time, I enjoy hiking, running, and playing badminton. Having been on the 2021/22 team, I am excited to return and support partnership efforts for CUBEC 2025/26.

Partnership Director

Jessica is currently a 4th year Biomedical Engineering student at the University of Calgary completing a 16-month internship as a Development Engineering Intern. She was previously the Co-President of the Biomedical Engineering Students’ Society at the University of Calgary in the 2023-2024 academic year. During her term, she was involved in the first CUBEC conference to be hosted in Calgary which helped initiate the future collaboration in Calgary between biomedical engineering groups across Canada. Her passion for biomedical engineering has been further nurtured through her involvement on the CUBEC executive team.

Who we are

The beginning of our story

2020-21

CUBEC founded by two student groups:

BMEUSA (Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Student Association) at UBC
BUSS (Bioengineering Undergraduate Student Society) at McGill.

First online conference gathered 300 + participants.

2020-22

CUBEC spun off into an independent national club

CUBEC hosted second online conference, gathering over 200 attendees and put on a national networking event.

2022-23

Slow year for CUBEC

CUBEC hosted another virtual networking event and underwent some restructuring to better support students across Canada.

2023-24

CUBEC relaunch

CUBEC incorporated as a national not-for profit organization to establish brand, partnerships and a constant mission. We hosted the first in-person CUBEC in Montreal, Toronto and Calgary! With support from companies like Medtronic, we were able to welcome over 400 students from 12+ universities across Canada.

CUBEC expanded its mission by launching an editorial branch, a podcast, and supporting students through outreach initiatives such as workshops in high-schools and CEGEPs, the first annual Canadian Biomedical Engineering Leadership Summit (CBME LS) and smaller scale events.

2024-25

CUBEC growth

CUBEC hosted the second in-person conference, bringing together 700 attendees in 4 cities, including an expansion to Vancouver. We hosted smaller scale events at McMaster, Waterloo and McGill.

Who we are

Our Pillars

Awareness

CUBEC is committed to raising awareness about the opportunities, challenges, and advancements in biomedical engineering. Through conferences, workshops, and outreach programs, we bring attention to the transformative potential of BME and inspire students across Canada to explore this innovative field.

Education

We believe in empowering students with knowledge and resources to succeed in biomedical engineering. From hands-on workshops to expert-led panels, our programs provide valuable learning experiences that bridge the gap between academia, industry, and research.

Inclusion

CUBEC fosters an inclusive community where every student, regardless of background or institution, has the opportunity to thrive. By connecting students nationwide and encouraging diverse voices, we create a collaborative space for innovation and growth in BME.
